Power Flush?
When heating systems are neglected and the appropriate chemicals are not added to them periodically to condition the water, several faults can occur. This includes excessive ‘air’ being produced. This is not actually air, but the gas created from the chemical reaction electrolysis. This occurs when measures have not been taken to prevent the natural reaction of ferrous (steel radiators) and non-ferrous (copper pipes) metals accelerated by water contained in the system. By adding an inhibitor periodically, this chemical reaction is significantly reduced.
What is a Power Flush?
When this process has been neglected for a long period of time, householders will notice cold spots occurring in their radiators. Not to be mistaken by air in the radiator, generally these cold spots occur at a low point in the radiator – whereas air is at the top and as earlier mentioned can be a symptom of electrolysis. When these cold spots occur, it is an indication that magnetite (sludge) is present and a machine capable of forcing it out of the system is required. This is known as a power flush, and can be very time consuming. As always, prevention is better than cure. So have some inhibitor added periodically, generally every 4 years or if the system is drained for any reason.
